Welcome to the Florida Wind Insurance Incentives Web Site!

By using this website Florida homeowners can find incentives on wind insurance for properties that have measures in place such as strengthened roof decks and shingles, specialized roof shapes and construction methods, shutter protection, impact proof window glazing, hurricane clips/straps, and other features that prevent or reduce damage during hurricanes and high wind incidents. These are available to both homeowners and builders.

If the property was built after 2002 it will have many of these features as standard and will most likely be eligible for insurance credits. Likewise, houses in Broward and Miami-Dade counties constructed after 1994 will have at least one qualifying feature as well.

Background

Florida Statute 627.0629 requires insurance companies to offer Florida homeowners "discounts, credits, or other rate differentials..." for construction techniques that reduce damage and loss in windstorms. Florida insurance and payday loan companies were required to submit filings by March 2003 that provide for these wind mitigation discounts. The insurance company filings began to take effect during 2003.

Scope

The Florida Department of Community Affairs funded a project to develop a Wind Mitigation Database; this web site is the result of that project. The discounts given on this web site are for single family or duplex houses. Discounts are also available for condominium and tenant occupancies, but they are not included in this version of the web site.

The discounts presented herein are given as percentages of the wind portion of your total insurance premium. The wind portion is between 15 and 70% of the total premium depending on where you live in Florida. Due to the complex nature of premium determination, actual dollar discounts are not calculated here. For premium quotes, contact your insurance agent or the individual insurance company in question.
